THE demolition of chimney stack at the old Anglesey Aluminium site will happen on March 20.

As part of a prize draw, which is raising funds for the RNLI, in memory of Holyhead RNLI volunteer crew member Iwan Williams, a member of the public will be given the opportunity to bring down the landmark which has stood in place for 50 years and press the button signalling the demolition.

Now remained Prosperity Parc, the land is owned by Swedish shipping line company Stena Line, one of the largest ferry operators.

The area has been designated as one of the specific customs and tax sites within the new Anglesey Freeport and represents a "prime opportunity" for new businesses looking to invest in the island.

Virginia Crosbie, MP for Ynys Môn, said: "The demolition of something that has been on the Anglesey skyline for 50 years and a symbol of our island’s industrial past is always going to elicit mixed emotions.

"But I am someone who looks forward and I see this chimney coming down on Wednesday 20th March as the end of one era and the rapid beginning of another.

"The new freeport is the next exciting phase for Ynys Môn and the demolition of the whole Anglesey Aluminium site is another foot forward for this huge investment in our island and its potential for jobs for decades to come."

Rhun ap Iorwerth, MS for Ynys Mon, said: “I welcome the fact that we’ve been given a date for this work to take place so that the community have time to prepare. I was also pleased that Stena confirmed, after I contacted them, that the demolition wouldn’t take place on St David’s day as originally proposed.

“I’ll now be seeking assurances from Stena that they’ll remain as transparent as possible with local residents, continue to listen to any concerns, and share any new information - on vantage points and so on - as soon as they can, and I’ll keep updating my constituents when new information is provided to me.”

Mr Williams died in 2023. During his period of service, Mr Williams gained recognition in having an operations commendation letter and a Chief Executive’s commendation letter, both for outstanding achievements and bravery.

In 2022, Mr Williams received his 30-year bar for long service for the RNLI.

Tickets for the prize draw are on sale until Monday, March 18. The winner will be drawn early next week.
