A MEMBER of the public will be given the opportunity to bring down a landmark that has stood at the old Anglesey Aluminium site for 50 years.

A prize draw has been launched ahead of the opportunity; Money will be raised for the RNLI through the draw in memory of Holyhead RNLI volunteer crew member Iwan Williams, who passed away in 2023.

The chimney stack stands at 122-metres tall. The winner, along with a friend or family member, will be given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the team at Stena and press the button to signal the demolition of the chimney stack.

Tony Price, RNLI Coxswain at Holyhead, said: "Iwan was steady and strong. For all his years, he gave over 100 per cent to saving lives and helping others around our coastline. We are immensely grateful to Stena for giving us the opportunity to benefit from this unique fundraiser in his memory. The chimney stack really is an iconic building and we’re hoping local people will be keen to try their luck at winning the draw and being a part of history."

The old Anglesey Aluminium site, renamed Prosperity Parc, is owned by Swedish shipping line company Stena Line, one of the largest ferry operators. The site has been designated as one of the specific customs and tax sites within the new Anglesey Freeport and represents a "prime opportunity" for new businesses looking to invest in the island.

Ian Davies, Head of UK Port Authorities for Stena Line, said: "This is a brilliant opportunity for communities across Anglesey to play their part in a historic moment for the island.

"The demolition of the chimney at Prosperity Parc marks an exciting next chapter in the development of the site, securing the site's future and ensuring it is ready for the next generation of investment.

"I'm also delighted that all proceeds of the prize draw will be going to such a brilliant cause – as a proud seafarer myself and member of the RNLI for over 20 years, I know how important local lifeboat stations are to the safety of those at sea, and I wish all entrants the very best of luck."
