THE MS for Ynys Môn, Rhun ap Iorwerth, has been unanimously chosen as Plaid Cymru’s candidate in the next Westminster election.

This news follows a meeting of the Ynys Môn Plaid Cymru constituency held last night (September 26) in Llangefni.

Mr ap Iorwerth, who has been a MS since 2013, stated his intention to seek nomination for the Westminster candidacy earlier this year.

He was first elected to the Senedd in a 2013 by-election, where he gained a 9,166 majority.

He was re-elected in 2016 with a majority of 9,510, which he increased again in the 2021 election, and currently holds a majority of 10,206 votes.

He will stand on a platform of uniting the island and protecting the interests of Ynys Môn - and Wales - in Westminster.

In response to his selection as Plaid Cymru’s Westminster candidate for Ynys Môn, Mr ap Iorwerth said: “Representing Ynys Môn in the Senedd is such a huge honour.

“But as our own Parliament grows in stature, it's vital to make sure Ynys Môn and Wales' voice is heard in the UK Parliament.

“The cruel budget announced last week, trashing the economy and squeezing the poorest whilst cutting taxes for the super-rich makes me even more determined to stand up for our community and to show that Wales deserves better than this.”

Dilwyn Griffiths, Plaid Cymru constituency chair, added: “I'm delighted that Rhun has been chosen as our Westminster candidate.

“It shows that Plaid Cymru are determined to win the Ynys Môn seat and return a skilled, capable and motivated Member of Parliament who has a proven record in representing Anglesey.

“He knows the island and its people and is well-respected, as demonstrated by his huge Senedd majority.

“We know that Rhun is seeking election to continue to work hard for the sake of the people of Ynys Môn, and Wales, and we look forward to campaigning alongside him.”
