The sign for the Welsh village with the longest name in the UK has been tampered with overnight.

Irish bookmaker Paddy Power hijacked the 'welcome to' sign for the famous village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch on Thursday evening (May 25) making its own cheeky addition.

The bookmaker added to the sign: "Twinned with Chelsea FC, the only place with more Ls."

The town sign famously features four Ls in a row and total of 11 and the change was made to poke fun at Chelsea FC’s losing form this season.

Chelsea have lost 16 matches so far in the current Premier League season following last night’s defeat against Manchester United.

Paddy Power’s odds suggest that figure is likely to hit 17 by Sunday when they play their final match of the campaign against Newcastle.

Paddy Power spokesperson, Rachael Kane, said: "Football is booming in Wales at the moment, with Hollywood A-listers catapulting local clubs to major success.

"Given its renaissance, we thought Chelsea might benefit from some Welsh magic, and with a population of just 3,000, they might need the support of every single one of them come Sunday. Chin up lads, Potch is en route!”

Reaction to Paddy Powers alterations to the sign

Locals from the North Wales village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll (the shorter version of the name) were shocked when they awoke this morning to learn the place they call home had been "very unofficially twinned" with the West London club.

Passers-by stopped to take photos this morning, while others took to social media to share their enjoyment of the changes to the sign.

Paddy Powers Facebook post of the sign received more than 2000 reactions, over 450 comments and 680 shares (all at the time of publication).

On Twitter, one person, seemingly learning of the Welsh village for the first time, said: "WOW! Much longer than Mary Poppins’ word: “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”. #marypoppins"

While a Chelsea fan added: "We wish we had only lost 11 it would have been a lot better."
