RHUDDLAN Town manager Wayne Hughes is “massively proud” his side were crowned Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division champions.

The long-time frontrunners were awarded the title on a points-per-game basis after league officials opted to go in the same direction as the FAW by curtailing the remaining fixtures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This saw Hughes’ men finish above Llanfairfechan Town and Llansannan, who were placed second and third respectively.

Hughes, said: “The club is heading in a fantastic direction for the future and I’m massively proud to be a part of it.

“Thank you to all the lads who have played a part for Rhuddlan Town this season, and a special mention to Keiran Evans for coaching the lads and our captain Jay Whitehouse who leads by example on and off the pitch with his commitment.

“Thank you to everyone who’s taken the time to congratulate us, especially those at Llansannan and Llanfairfechan who showed fantastic sportsmanship in being the first to say we deserved it.

“Not the way we all wanted to end the season but it’s the only way.

“I’m really looking forward to pre-season and hopefully making the squad stronger with a few new additions if we can. We also hope to add to the coaching side of things as well.”

It proved to be a season of great progress for Rhuddlan, who won 13 and drew 2 of their 16 league games.

They were on top of the standings for the majority of the campaign, scoring 70 and conceding 26. Although they suffered defeats in cup competitions, Hughes’ side dropped just seven league points to claim the crown.

One-time championship challengers Abergele eventually finished fourth after a promising term, with Llanelwy Athletic and Rhos United finishing in the bottom two.
