TWO footballers from the region have been rewarded for their exceptional recent form with an award shortlisting.

Porthmadog’s flamboyant forward Shaun Cavanagh and Bangor City captain Hugo Colace form two thirds of the JD Cymru North Player of the Month candidates for February.

The duo have been in sensational form since signing for their respective clubs in the January window, with Gresford Athletic’s Joe Chaplin making up the shortlist following a standout loan spell from Colwyn Bay so far.

Cavanagh joined Port for more game time after spending the first half of the season at JD Cymru Premier outfit Caernarfon Town. He has been at his brilliant best for Craig Papirnyk’s men since re-joining the fold and has contributed some important goals to turn around their fortunes.

The tricky player is one of the best playmakers in the region when at the top of his game and has been a revelation at Y Traeth since the turn of the year.

Colace was arguably the highest profile signing of the window, with the midfielder boasting football league experience at Sky Bet Championship side Barnsley.

The cultured player has been an assured presence in the middle of the park for the resurgent Citizens’, who were on a tremendous run of form before the coronavirus pandemic forced the domestic season to come to a standstill.

City’s biggest recruit for many years has also been lending his support to their youth academy structure, which has more than 100 children from across the region taking part.

Although no formal winner has been announced as yet, Cavanagh won a public poll on social media regarding the award, with Colace finishing in third.
