HOLYHEAD Hotspur extended their lead at the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One summit with a 2-0 home win over St Asaph City.
The quadruple-chasing Holy Islanders’ took another big step to making an instant return to JD Cymru North with a vital three points in extremely difficult conditions, leaving them seven points clear of Glan Conwy with four games in hand and eight ahead of Denbigh Town having played once more.
The Holy Islanders’ have another pivotal fixture this weekend in the form of Saturday’s FAW Trophy semi-final against Llandudno Albion at the home of JD Cymru Premier outfit Bala Town (12.30pm).
Manager Darren Garmey, said: “The conditions were horrendous and we are delighted with the three points.
“I have to praise firstly the referee Richard Burge for making the call to play the game, and then both teams for competing and giving everything in what I would say is the strongest wind I’ve seen in any football match anywhere.
“Now we can finally look forward to the FA Trophy semi-final next week.”
The visitors played with the wind in the first half but were unable to take any of the chances that came their way despite being camped in the Spurs’ half for almost the entirety of the first period.
Things were far tougher after the break, but City held firm in the face of unrelenting pressure until Asa Thomas’ long-range effort flew into the net on 60 minutes.
They were undone again late on when Thomas hit his second of the afternoon straight from a corner with five remaining to round off the scoring and extend their perfect home league record to eight games.
