A CAMPAIGN has been launched to try and save a prominent footballing area of Llandudno that threatens the future of two clubs.

The town’s site at The Oval has been in steady decay for a number of years and will not meet the minimum requirement for the Football Association of Wales’ new criteria next season if considerable improvements are not made.

This includes a temporary barrier around the site and dugouts, which will be funded by the two clubs is necessary but needs approval from Conwy county council that has not yet come.

It is currently the home of Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division Two side Llandudno Amateurs and Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League Premier Division outfit Llandudno Athletic, with Llandudno Albion also using the venue as their base during the initial stages.

A petition to raise awareness and gather support, with more than 100 signatures already gathered in the first few hours of publishing.

Athletic manager Rhys Lane, said: “We have been working to have some alterations made at The Oval to facilitate the progress the clubs have made.

“In order for these clubs to continue to play at their current levels a pitch with goals is no longer enough.

“This has been a two-year process and still we have got nowhere. We have made it clear that the clubs will foot the cost of all this development and all we require is the green light.”

Plans have also been formed to move to a new site on Trinity Avenue with little success, leaving the immediate future of the clubs involved in significant doubt.

“It appears the council values the area more for dog fouling than football fouls,” added Lane.

“For many years The Oval has been neglected and is in poor condition which is really sad to see “The alterations would be for the benefit of all youth and junior sides also and will safeguard the site in many ways.”

The Oval is one of only 15 grounds nationwide that has ever hosted a Wales international fixture.
