A SECOND half fightback saw Holyhead Hotspur secure a Lock Stock Cookson Cup final berth with a 2-1 victory at Greenfield.
The Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One leaders were made to work hard for their place in the showcase after going behind in the first period, giving the Holy Islanders’ a realistic chance of multiple trophies at the end of the campaign.
Another huge test awaits the in-form side this weekend when they travel to Welshpool Town in a hugely significant FAW Trophy quarter-final contest.
Manager Darren Garmey, said: “We are pleased to have booked our place in the final after another tough game.
“Greenfield are a very good side as we seen in our visit in the league earlier in the season, they have improved again since and boast the best defensive record in the league, so we were expecting a tight game.
“If I’m honest I don’t think we were at our best today and we just did enough to come through in the end.”
Things looked bleak for the visitors during a disappointing first half that saw them go into the break a goal down when Ryan Jones’ strike narrowly evaded Carl Jones on the half hour mark.
After the break saw the away side rally against a formidable home defence, levelling matters on 52 minutes when Corey Jones made the most of the space afforded to him with a neat finish.
Both sides spurned good chances to impact the score further midway through the half, with the deciding moment arriving on 76 minutes when prolific forward Chris Jones steered home a chance and give Spurs’ a place in the final later this season.
