BANGOR 1876 took another huge step towards the Gwynedd League title after a resounding 4-0 victory at Glantraeth.

It proved to be a pivotal day for the fan-owned club in their quest for promotion at the first time of asking, and they are now five points clear of Trearddur Bay Bulls with two games in hand following their shock defeat at Talysarn Celts.

A strong start from the visitors saw them take the lead on nine minutes through an unlikely source, with defender Michael Johnston continued his remarkable recent exploits in front of goal with a close-range finish to break the deadlock.

Things got even better for the visitors midway through the half when a sublime through ball from Jamie Petrie presented Dylan Summers-Jones with a tremendous chance, and the talented youngster produced a clinical effort to double their cushion.

Petrie thought he had notched a goal of his own on the half hour mark only for his effort to be ruled out for offside, and visiting stopper Danial Williams had to be at his best to deny Treath’s Bradley Bland just before the break.

The second period began in the same manner as the first, with 1876 extending their lead and all-but securing three points on 52 minutes when Petrie finally got his name on the score-sheer with a neat turn and shot inside the area.

Another profitable afternoon at the office was wrapped up on 73 minutes with a powerful drive that gave the home custodian no chance to round off another impressive overall display from Mel Jones’ men during what has been a memorable first campaign to date.

There is a short turnaround for 1876 as they can extend their cushion at the top of the standings even further this Monday when they welcome Waunfawr to Treborth (7.45pm).
