HOLYHEAD Hotspur manager Darren Garmey was beaming with pride after his side secured a 2-0 FAW Trophy fifth round win at Bodedern Athletic.
The home side opened the game on the front foot and went ahead on the half hour mark through a sensational free-kick from Chris Jones, and they doubled their advantage with ten remaining thanks to a Rob Jones strike after Carl Jones had saved a spot-kick to keep his side ahead.
Garmey, said: “I cannot praise them enough, we were missing a few key players again but the lads that came in were unbelievable.
“We won our battles all over the pitch and had the quality in front of goal when it counted. The key moments were Chris Jones’ superb chip and Stumpy’s penalty save at 1-0 and that quality was the difference.
“Also worth mentioning we finished with a midfield with the ages of 16, 17 and 19 years old and this makes the win even sweeter for us.”
Nantlle Vale also reached the sixth round stage with a resounding 5-0 home victory over Barmouth and Dyffryn United.
Aaron Thomas’ opener on 35 minutes gave Danny Bell’s side a slender advantage at the half time whistle, and they notched four more after the break through Cynan Davies, Aaron Hughes Tom Mahoney and Dion Roberts to complete the rout.
Nefyn United’s attempts at another major shock failed at home to Denbigh Town, with the Gwynedd League outfit falling to a 5-1 reverse at the hands of the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One title contenders.
Llanrug United’s quest for cup glory also ended with a narrow 1-0 home reverse to Brymbo, with Gaerwen falling to a 4-2 loss at Rhos Aelwyd after extra-time.
