BANGOR City men’s hockey team were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Winnington Park 2nds on Saturday.

A frantic opening saw both teams create early opportunities. Oli Ekberg had a goalbound effort blocked on the line by a Winnington foot, but City failed to capitalise from the resultant short corner.

At the other end, Gwion Jones was on hand to block a shot heading for the bottom corner.

As the first half progressed, the visitors controlled possession more and more, going close on a few occasions and drawing some classy saves from City goalkeeper Harri Evans.

Winnington eventually broke the deadlock on 27 minutes with a shot from a short corner, which Gwion Jones almost managed to block, but not quite.

City responded positively with Flynn Holt causing havoc down the left wing, helping create numerous chances, but to no avail.

The second half saw Winnington start brightly, with keeper Evans equal to their efforts. But City struck back on 52 minutes, with Harry Collins-Jones skilfully converting an exquisite through ball from Ash Hardaker.

The goal gave City confidence and the hosts pushed for a winning goal. Holt, Paul McCallum and Harry Street went close, while Hardaker put a drag flick just wide from a short corner.

Winnington also posed a threat on the break but the City defence managed to repel the visitors’ late counter attacks to earn their side a deserved share of the spoils.

The draw leaves Bangor eighth in NWHL Division Two as they head to the Wirral next Saturday to take on Neston 4ths, pushback 12pm.
