BANGOR 1876 reached the JD Welsh Cup second round with a dramatic penalty shootout triumph over Penycae.

The Gwynedd League side progressed to the next stage despite being held to a 3-3 draw after extra-time, which is the first time they have failed to win a competitive match since forming this summer.

Things got off to the worst possible start for the hosts, who fell behind after just three minutes when a powerful strike from Anthony Dunleavy found its way past talented stopper Leon Jones.

This was met by an instant reply that arrived on five minutes when prolific forward Jamie Petrie successfully converted from the penalty spot after experienced forward Les Davies was bundled over in the box.

Both sides were wasteful with the opportunities that came their way during the remainder of the first period, and it was the visitors that regained the initiative after the break when a curling effort from Dunleavy hit the target on 77 minutes for his second of the contest.

Credit to the fan-owned side, they kept plugging away right until the death and restored parity to the score line in stoppage time when Cameron Barry’s delivery was turned in by defender Matty Lock with the final goal mouth action of the 90 minutes.

The away side picked themselves up following the latest setback and took the lead for a third time on 103 minutes thanks to Evan Woodall, who timed his run perfectly to finish off a cross in style.

The second period of extra-time saw 1876 handed another golden chance to get back on level terms with their second penalty of the game late on, and Petrie held his nerve once again to despatch the spot kick and send the game to a shootout.

Davies, Dylan Williams and Petrie all found the net during penalties to spark delirious scenes between players and supporters following the most dramatic afternoon to date at their Treborth base.
