RUTHIN 32

CAERNARFON 15

THE lads from Cae Ddol are still waiting to drop their first point of the campaign.

Ruthin continue to lead in way in WRU League Division One (North) after securing a bonus point win at home to Caernarfon.

The 32-15 outcome means Ruthin have now picked up 15 out of a possible 15 points and they have a one-point advantage over second-placed Pwllheli.

In a hard-fought encounter, the Blues had points on the board after just seven minutes when wing Bryn Sheppard ran over the whitewash after a Ruthin lineout in the Cofis' 22.

The visitors went further behind after 20 minutes of play.

A good break by centre Mike Jones led to wing Gwion Richards grabbing a try, which he converted himself.

Caernarfon responded and after spending some time trying to break down the home defence, they reduced the arrears with a try.

Ruthin bounced right back within five minutes via a pushover try from the pack from a lineout five yards out from the Caernarfon line, with second row Chris Davies claiming the honours.

The whistle blew for half-time with Ruthin comfortably ahead 17-5.

After the break, the Blues returned to the visitors’ 22 and within a few minutes, Davies was over the line again for a try.

At 22-5 ahead, it looked as though the home side might coast until the end of the game, but Caernarfon had other ideas.

After a penalty kick led to a lineout on Ruthin’s 22, the Gwynedd side went over for their second try.

Again, Ruthin came back and they stretched their advantage further with a try by full back Iestyn Davies.

Despite further pressure from the Blues, it was Caernarfon who were back on the scoreboard next with their third try.

At 27-15, a possible two league points were available to the visitors if they scored a further try.

However, with three minutes to go, Blues' captain Emyr Gwynedd extinguished that hope with a fine dash over the try line and the game ended with no further score.

Caernarfon's try scorers were Ilan Davies and Ieuan Owen (2).
