COLWYN Bay Cricket Club will play host to Glamorgan’s annual fixture at their Penrhyn Avenue base next week.

The Specsavers County Championship side take on Lancashire in an eagerly anticipated four-day contest from Sunday, August 18, which sees the Division Two title rivals battle it out for bragging rights that could go a long way to determining who claims the championship and promotion at the end of the season.

Glamorgan currently sit 28 points behind Lancashire after ten games, and a big contingent from the red rose county is expected to travel down to North Wales to witness the encounter.

The South Walians have enjoyed a long and successful history of fixtures at the Bay, with their first visit to the area taking place in the mid-1960s.

Bay entered the Glamorgan record books in 2000 as Steve James became the first batsman in the club's history to score a triple hundred as he made 309 not out against Sussex, sharing in a record opening stand of 374 with Matthew Elliott as they posted their highest ever first-class score of 718-3.

The ground also saw a high-scoring Championship match with Lancashire, with the visitors posting 698-5 with double-hundreds from Alviro Petersen and Ashwell Prince, as the pair of South Africans added a record 501 for the third wicket.

The ground has seen some remarkable bowling performances, with Glamorgan's Tony Cordle coming on as seventh change in the match against Leicestershire in 1969 and ending up with the remarkable figures of 9/49.

In the Championship match in 1999, Glamorgan reduced Nottinghamshire to 9/6 after a superb opening spell by Steve Watkin who took five wickets for just two runs in a 22-ball spell.

Penrhyn Avenue was also the ground where Glamorgan clinched the Totesport League title in 2004 by defeating Lancashire in a thrilling contest.

Play will start at 11am on each day of the contest, and tickets can be purchased from https://tickets.glamorgancricket.com/Online/.
