LLANGEFNI Town bowed out of the Nathaniel MG Cup at the first-round stage with a 3-1 defeat at Llanfair United.
The newly promoted JD Cymru North side were well in the contest until late in the second period to ensure their foray in the competition was a brief one, giving Chris Roberts’ side the weekend off before their eagerly anticipated second tier opener
Despite the eventual result it was the visitors got the tie off on the front foot, and they were rewarded for their impressive opening to proceedings when Craig Roberts’ towering header at the far post gave them the lead early on.
This was met by a strong response from the home side, who got themselves back on level terms after 23 minutes when Karl Seliaerts delivered a superb 20-yard striker that found its way into the corner.
The second period was another closely fought affair until United got their noses in front for the first time in the tie on 50 minutes when Josh Astley was presented with a chance, and he calmly put away the chance to give the hosts a slender advantage.
Cefni had a golden chance to equalise soon after when they were awarded a penalty with 65 on the clock, but their spot kick was turned away by home custodian Danny Foulkes and the danger was averted.
Roberts’ side threw extra caution to the wind in the dying moments in pursuit of a route back into the contest, which left them vulnerable at the back and a quick counter-attack from United saw Ashley Davies double their advantage and secure their win in stoppage time.
