CLWB Pêl-Droed Bangor 1876 Football Club have sent shockwaves through the North Wales football scene with their first two official signings.

The new fan-owned club’s manager Mel Jones confirmed that trophy laden duo Les Davies and Michael Johnston have signed on at the Gwynedd League side, which represents a significant statement of intent from the ambitious set-up.

The duo amassed more than 600 appearances at JD Welsh Premier League level, and Davies has turned down the chance to sign for Aberystwyth Town in favour of a move to the club.

He is best known as the iconic striker who helped Bangor City and Nev Powell to Welsh Premier League title glory in 2011, in addition to Welsh Cup wins in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

He has since played for Connah’s Quay Nomads, Bala Town and the Citizens’ before his move to Llandudno, and he has netted 123 WPL goals to his name from more than 400 appearances.

The former Wales U18 international, said: “I’m really excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“I’m committed to giving the fans a football club that they can be proud, and one that they and the community can support.”

Johnston is a talented defender who has also enjoyed a tremendous amount of success during his playing career, with the centre-half representing the Citizens, Tudno and Caernarfon Town in recent years.

“The people of Bangor are close to my heart and it’s an exciting opportunity that I’m proud to be involved with,” added Johnston.

“I’m really looking forward to sharing my experience with young local talent and hope that this will put them and the Bangor 1876 in good stead for the future.”

In addition to their playing duties, both Davies and Johnston will begin their pathway into coaching during the coming season to further boost their overall influence within the set-up.
