LLANGEFNI Town were unable to secure a memorable double as they were beaten 2-1 by Llanrwst United after extra time in the Mawddach Challenge Cup final.

The Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One champions end the season with two pieces of silverware after a narrow reverse at the home of Conwy Borough, but Chris Roberts’ men can now look forward to Tier 2 North football next term after finally achieving an elusive promotion.

A tense opening to the showcase brought little in the way of goalmouth action in the first period, but United came out of the blocks flying after the break and got their noses in front when Aron Jones took advantage of some hesitant defending to hit the target on 56 minutes.

This looked like being enough to give Llanrwst the bragging rights in normal time, but Chris Roberts’ side showed their fighting qualities in the closing stages and they levelled matter courtesy of a sensational effort from Harry Galeotti to send the final into an additional 30 minutes.

The crucial moment in the tie arrived on 100 minutes when Callum Parry finished well, and United held firm in the face of some incredible pressure during the final stages to secure the cup for the third time in their history.

They also achieved the same feat in 1998 and 2013 after successes against Nantlle Vale and Penrhyndeudraeth.

A busy summer is now expected at Cefni as Roberts hones his squad ahead of some stiff challenges in the second tier, which has been made even stronger with the arrivals of Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.
