BANGOR City’s EuroGold Stadium can now host professional boxing events after receiving approval from the sport’s governing body.

The British Boxing Board of Control visited the Tier 2 North side to inspect their facilities on Sunday, April 28 ahead of a proposed event at the site in the summer, and they passed all the necessary criteria needed to stage it at their base.

A club statement, read: “Dennis Hobson, in association with VSM, will host an evening of professional boxing at the venue.

And the Welsh Area Council secretary Jeffrey Williams confirmed that the stadium now has a licence to host boxing.”

This will be the first time that a massive boxing event has been held in the city since 1979 and the show, which will be billed ‘Mayhem on the Menai’, will be screened exclusively live on a British free-to-air sports channel and be promoted by VSM Europe in conjunction with Mr Hobson.

Last time a big card took place in the region saw Dave Davies stop Clifton Wallace on a bill promoted by Liverpool’s Charles Atkinson – and it was the first ever championship boxing to be hosted in North Wales.

Details regarding the show, including the identity of the broadcaster, fighters on the show, ticket information and an official date, will be announced in the coming weeks.
