LLANGEFNI Town manager Chris Roberts hailed the club’s loyal fan base following their 1-0 Lock Stock Cookson Cup victory over Penrhydeudraeth.

The Division One title hopes secured the first leg of their treble attempt with a hard-fought display against their third-tier rivals, and the Cefni boss was thrilled for the “unsung heroes that work so hard behind the scenes”.

He said: “It was great for us to win our first trophy of the season last night against a good well organised side. It wasn’t pretty but we got the job done.

“Credit to Piercy, Iwan and the Penrhyn lads, I thought they were well drilled and played some good football and I wish them all the best for the rest of the season.

“It was a great free-kick by the in-form Liam Morris to win it for us but I have to also mention another clean sheet which is pleasing.

“The lads have been outstanding so far this season and they thoroughly deserve that win. It’s always good to get a cup win under our belt early and with another final at the end of the season our focus is now firmly on our target of winning the league and gaining promotion.

“The fans were outstanding again last night turning out in numbers and getting behind us from the start.

“That win is for them, for everyone who has stuck by this fantastic football club and for all the unsung heroes that work so hard behind the scenes.”

A tense opening to the showcase, which was played at the home of Huws Gray Alliance side Porthmadog, brought little in the way of goalmouth opportunity despite both sides enjoying good spells of possession throughout the first period.

The critical moment in the contest arrived on 64 minutes when Town were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position, and Liam Morris delivered a sensational effort into the corner to give his side the advantage.

Despite their best efforts, Penrhyn were unable to find a way past the resolute Cefni rearguard in the closing stages.
