A SENSATIONAL start saw RGC get back to winning ways thanks to a 40-7 home triumph over Principality Premiership rivals Bargoed.

The Gogs came out on the front foot and it took them just two minutes to break the deadlock when forward Joe Simpson burst over the line after a prolonged spell of pressure. Bill McBryde fired over the conversion.

This provoked a strong response from the visitors, who were denied a score of their own soon after thanks to a stunning last-ditch tackle from Evan Yardley, and they were undone by a scintillating counter-attack on ten minutes which resulted in Tom Hughes collecting a long kick upfield in his stride to cross the white wash. McBryde failed to add the extras.

Mark Jones’ men continued to pile on the pressure during a blistering start to proceedings, which brought further success on 18 minutes when a powerful driving maul saw Sam Wainwright touch down from close range, with McBryde despatching the conversion.

The away side did have some sustained possession towards the end of the first period, but they were finding it difficult to penetrate the RGC rearguard, and the home side extended their lead further thanks to a penalty try in added time.

After the interval saw the rampant hosts pick up where they left off from the outset thanks to Bryn Jones score on 44 minutes that was converted by McBryde, but a host of changes from Jones midway through the half halted their momentum as the head coach opted to give some much-needed minutes to the whole squad.

This resulted in both sides cancelling each other for the majority of the second period, but the away side did manage to secure a consolation try after 75 when Darren Humphries barged his way over. Calum Jones fired over the extras shortly before the Gogs rounded off the scoring with a try from Harri Evans and conversion by McBryde with 77 gone.
