A student football team were cheered on by some famous fans as they competed in the Scottish Cup.

Sir Andy Murray’s mother Judy and Olympic swimmer Duncan Scott were among 400 spectators at the University of Stirling’s fixture against Elgin City on Saturday.

It was the first time the team had competed in the third round of the national competition, but they went down 4-0 to the Scottish League Two side.

Stirling coach Chris Geddes said: “I have been involved with the university for eight seasons now and I have never seen anything like this at a home game before.

“I would have loved to have been playing today. The crowd was much bigger than I expected and to see that many people was excellent.

“Judy Murray is obviously big news in this area – so it was great for her to come along and support us.

“The fans were outstanding and we could hear them – it was really good for the boys.”
