Gwynedd man, 76, admits killing fellow pensioner in crash

AN ELDERLY man from Gwynedd has admitted killing another pensioner in a crash in the county.

Malcolm Pook, 76, of Penrhos Polish Village, Pwllheli, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Eric Bergqvist by careless or inconsiderate driving at Caernarfon Crown Court on Tuesday (October 6).

Mr Bergqvist died aged 74 following the crash, which involved a Blue Kia Sportage, on the A499 near Gyrn Goch on February 19, 2021.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.

Pook will be sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court on Wednesday, October 21.

While he was granted unconditional bail by Judge Timothy Petts, an interim disqualification from driving was imposed.

Judge Petts reserved the sentencing hearing to himself.

Following the death of Mr Bergqvist, a grandfather was described as being “local to the Gyrn Goch area,” his family paid tribute to him.

They said: "Eric was an amazing treasure to have in your life, and everyone is deeply shocked by his sudden loss.

"His grandchildren cannot imagine never being able to see their beloved taid again, and his partner Gretta says he was her anchor and she doesn't know what she will do without him."

His daughter, Sherrin, added: "My brothers and I are completely devastated. He was my best friend and inspiration.

“None of our lives will ever be complete again.”
