PETROL prices have surged, with costs rising 4.4p a litre since the bank holiday.
This increase has brought the average price to 166.2p a litre, a level last seen in October 2022.
Diesel has also increased by 4.1p since September 1, now averaging 187.7p a litre, a price last recorded in May 2026.
The AA has pointed out that 380 forecourts in England, Scotland, and Wales are charging Northern Ireland’s cheaper prices, where petrol is reportedly more than 6p a litre cheaper.
The Competition and Markets Authority has previously criticised the high prices of road fuel in the UK, even before the recent surge in wholesale costs.
These forecourts have maintained their prices, despite the wholesale cost of petrol increasing by more than 15p a litre since early August.
