A former Welsh rugby international is leading a gruelling endurance challenge in support of two life-changing causes.

Paul Thorburn is heading a team of nine on the Paddle, Peak and Pedal challenge.

A 12-day expedition involving kayaking, climbing, and cycling across Wales to raise £50,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association and Prostate Cymru.

The team will kayak from Mumbles Yacht Club in Swansea to Anglesey, climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), and then cycle 150 miles back to Swansea.

Mr Thorburn, known for his record-breaking 64.2-metre penalty against Scotland in 1986, said: "My challenge colleagues and I have all witnessed the devastating impact that these diseases have on individuals, their close families and friends.

"We are delighted that Everywhen is sponsoring us as we aim to support the ongoing research into finding cures.

"As well as the financial donation, the input from Everywhen has proven invaluable, ensuring that we have considered all the risks and made appropriate plans to deal with the daily activities and any unexpected situations which can sometimes arise with challenges of this magnitude."

The challenge finishes on August 31.

It will raise funds for research, care, and support services for people living with MND and prostate cancer.

The team is made up of individuals personally affected by the diseases, including former rugby players, a retired Metropolitan Police officer, a teacher, a former civil servant, and a team member currently recovering from prostate cancer.

Sponsors include insurance specialists Everywhen, which operates offices in Cardiff and Swansea.

Justin Newton, regional managing director at Everywhen, said: "The scale of this challenge cannot be underestimated.

"To paddle, climb and pedal their way through such a demanding programme is an incredible undertaking, and one that reflects the passion and dedication Paul and the team have for the causes they are supporting.

"Everyone at Everywhen is proud to stand behind them as they raise awareness and vital funds for charities doing such important work.

"We wish every member of the team the very best as they embark on this remarkable challenge."
