A TEENAGER from Bangor has written to King Charles III, claiming to be of royal descent.

Lucas Ashton-Milne, a 17-year-old autistic artist and writer, has sent a letter to the king, outlining how he believes he is his 14th cousin, twice removed.

It follows extensive research by Lucas into his family’s history; he also claims that this connection “could extend to millions of other people worldwide, including international leaders and celebrities”.

Lucas said: “I say I’m a descendant of King Edward III (who reigned over England from 1327–1377). From that line, I believe the royal family are my cousins.

“I also believe I can trace ancestry back through figures such as Philip IV of France, Peter the Cruel of Castile, William the Conqueror, Brian Boru (the High King of Ireland), Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (Prince of Gwynedd), Malcolm III (King of Scotland), Lady Godiva, Harold Godwinson, Alfred the Great, Cerdic (the first King of Wessex), and ultimately Charlemagne.

“I could go further back into more ancient figures, but the sourcing becomes less straightforward, so I haven’t pursued it that far.”

Some specific relationships which Lucas claims include: King Charles III as his 14th cousin, twice removed; Princess Diana as his 11th cousin; Edward IV and Richard III as his first cousins, 19 times removed; and Henry VII as his second cousin, 19 times removed.

He also claims Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour (Henry VIII’s second and third wives) as his 16th and 14th great-aunts, and Katherine Howard (Henry VIII’s fifth wife) as his first cousin, 16 times removed.

Lucas added: “Beyond royalty, I believe this network reaches many famous people, including US presidents, international leaders, writers, philosophers, scientists, business leaders, sportspeople, and celebrities.

“This idea isn’t entirely surprising. It’s been said that all English descend from Edward I and all Scots from Malcolm III.

“I’ve sent a letter to King Charles III outlining how I believe we’re related, and I’m hoping for a response.

“It feels incredible that one family line could branch out into connections with so many people.”
