MORE than 100 people applied to become the 'Keeper of Penrhyn Castle' - a job that comes with accommodation.

The rare opportunity for a Facilities Co-ordinator to help care for Penrhyn Castle and Garden and Plas Newydd House - where film Madfabulous was filmed - and to live at Penrhyn Castle went live in June.

The National Trust, which manages the historic properties, has not yet revealed who has secured the role but did tell the North Wales Chronicle and our sister titles: "We had a fantastic response to the Facilities Co-Ordinator role with over 100 applicants."

The two sites welcome 300,000 visitors each year.

Set on the edge of Eryri, Penrhyn Castle is a vast neo-Norman building, surrounded by gardens and woodland – while across the Menai Straits on Ynys Môn, Plas Newydd is a Grade I-listed house with glorious gardens and woodland.

The job involves balancing competing priorities - across a castle and a historic house, solving problems under pressure and working closely with a team to keep these special places open and accessible.

The accommodation is a two-bedroom flat within the castle, complete with its own kitchen and lounge. The postholder will also take on the responsibility of being a key representative, alongside two other colleagues, helping to ensure the castle and its grounds are secure.

William Sharp, Facilities Manager for Gogledd Orllewin Cymru (North West Wales), said: “The day-to-day role will see you coordinating contractors and managing key supplier relationships, leading and organising facilities team workstreams, and keeping a close eye on compliance planning and tracking.

"It’s a varied, hands-on role where you’ll be supporting the smooth running of two complex historic properties – and no two days are ever the same."

All Dressed Up, an exhibition showcasing five striking costumes from Madfabulous, is currently running at Plas Newydd.

The movie was filmed at Plas Newydd House and Garden in September 2024, with exterior scenes shot across the lawns, the house and the Menai Strait, as well as at the jetty, terraces and croquet lawn.

Interior filming took place in the Gothick Porch and Gothick Hall, alongside other locations in North Wales, including Penrhyn Castle and Garden.

The exhibition will run until November 2, 2026.
