Young people are being offered the chance to go behind the scenes at a major national event.

A new scheme will offer a behind-the-scenes experience at the Royal Welsh Show in July, with special access to the Food & Drink Wales Business Lounge, tailored for those with an interest in the food and drink sector.

The opportunity is part of the Welsh Government’s Food & Drink Skills Wales programme, and is open to individuals aged 18 and over.

Llyr Gruffydd, cabinet minister for rural resilience and sustainability, said: "The Royal Welsh Show is a cornerstone of our food and drink sector, showcasing the very best of Welsh produce and talent.

"This exciting opportunity gives young people a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how our industry operates and thrives at a commercial level.

"We are committed to supporting the next generation into rewarding careers, and experiences like this help to build skills, confidence and valuable connections.

"I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in food and drink to apply and take advantage of this unique insight into a vibrant and growing sector that is so important to our economy."

Located in the Food Hall, the Business Lounge is an invitation-only space where buyers and suppliers meet.

More than 2,000 products from over 300 Welsh businesses will be on display.

Successful applicants will take part in a guided three-hour experience during show week, led by industry experts.

The experience includes meeting buying teams, learning how products reach supermarket shelves, and gaining insight into sales and negotiation processes.

Participants will also tour the Food Hall, meet producers, and experience the environment of working behind a stall.

The scheme is particularly relevant to those considering careers in sales, marketing, retail, or entrepreneurship within the food and drink sector.

A complimentary entry ticket to the show will be provided, and travel support is also available.

Ifan Davies, a previous participant, said: "Getting the chance to go behind the scenes at the Royal Welsh Show was such a great opportunity.

"Having access to the Welsh Government Food Division Business Lounge and Product Showcase to see how buyers and producers work together gave me a new perspective of how products make it to the shelves.

"I felt like I’d won the lottery of opportunity when I was shown around the Business Lounge and Product Showcase."

Spaces are limited, and submitting an expression of interest does not guarantee a place.

Applications close on Monday, June 29.
