A THEME park is marking 10 years of its pioneering solar-powered water ride.

GreenWood Family Park, located just five miles from Bangor, introduced Solar Splash in 2016, hitting the headlines as it the UK's first solar-powered water ride.

The ride continues to delight guests while making a statement about the possibilities of sustainable tourism.

Chris Jones, general manager at GreenWood Family Park, said: "When Solar Splash launched 10 years ago, it was about showing that sustainable day out can still be an exciting day out.

"Being the first in the UK to introduce a solar-powered water ride was a bold statement about who we are and what we stood for.

"We’re incredibly proud of the role Solar Splash has played in shaping GreenWood’s identity and we’re excited about what the next decade years will bring."

The ride is powered by a 576-panel solar array that supplies renewable energy to transport boats uphill, before sending them down water chutes.

Water for the ride is also sourced sustainably via a 250ft borehole drilled on site.

This approach reduces the park’s reliance on traditional electricity sources and aligns with its broader commitment to sustainability.

Operated by Continuum Attractions, GreenWood Family Park also features the world’s only people-powered rollercoaster, the Green Dragon.

The park has implemented additional green measures, including harvesting 130 square metres of rainwater annually and recycling all its food waste.

It is known for combining family fun with eco-friendly practices.

Chris added: "A decade later, that hasn’t changed.

"It’s still thrilling families every day while demonstrating that attractions can reduce their environmental impact and still give guests a brilliant experience.

"We’re incredibly proud of the role Solar Splash has played in shaping GreenWood’s identity and we’re excited about what the next decade years will bring.”
