AN Anglesey mum claimed more than £16,000 in benefits she wasn't entitled to.
Danielle Jones, of Minffordd in Llangefni, appeared for sentence at Caernarfon Crown Court on Friday.
The 34-year-old had previously admitted one offence of fraud.
Elen Owen, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant made a universal credit claim for her and one dependent child - on the grounds that she didn't live with her partner.
Part of her claim was to cover childcare costs, related to a day care centre.
And while it began as a legitimate claim, Jones continued to accept money for the childcare provision even after her child stopped going to it.
In all, she was overpaid some £16,244.73 between November 2021 and August 2024.
When interviewed, she confirmed the claims process was "fairly easy to navigate" and that she knew it was her responsibility to inform the DWP of changes to her circumstances.
The court heard Jones had since repaid the sum.
Ms Owen said the defendant had no previous convictions before this one.
Richard Edwards, defending, made very limited submissions to the court - having heard Judge Nicola Jones' intention to impose a community order.
He did however set out potential payment options for his client in the event of any financial impositions.
Judge Jones, turning to the defendant, told her: "The reality is you got yourself into a dreadful financial mess and didn't have anyone to turn to.

"It started off as an honest claim, but when you got into dire financial straits, you stopped your child going to childcare, but you kept the money instead.
"Prior to this you were a woman of good character.
"And you've now repaid this money."
The Judge imposed a 12 month community order with five rehabilitation activity days.
