PLANS for a large solar farm on Anglesey which prompted community opposition have been withdrawn.

The 350MW+ Maen Hir projects, developed by Lightsource bp respectively, would see more than 1,2500 acres of land taken up by solar farms.

A rally was held on Anglesey last summer objecting to the proposal, and a similar 160 MW scheme, Alaw Môn, on the island.

The plans were being considered by the UK Government Planning Inspectorate due to the scale of the scheme.

But Prosiect Maen Hir has now been halted after Lightsource bp’s planning application was withdrawn.

David Bell, director of LDA Design, wrote on behalf of Lightsource bp: "This decision has been taken as a precautionary step while the applicant undertakes further due diligence in relation to the proposed development and considers the most appropriate consenting route for the project.

"The withdrawal relates solely to participation in the pre-application process.

“The applicant remains committed to the Prosiect Maen Hir and its contribution to meeting the UK and Welsh Governments’ net zero commitments, by developing a scheme that will deliver meaningful environmental, landscape and biodiversity enhancements as well as benefits for the local community.

"Withdrawal from the pre-application stage allows time for the completion of further due diligence before a decision is made on how best to progress the project within the planning system."
