YSGOL Syr Hugh Owen in Caernarfon has been removed from a list of schools requiring significant improvement.

Estyn say the bilingual comprehensive secondary school, on Bethel Road, has made ‘significant improvement’ since its last inspection in April 2024, in which the school was told to improve pupils' attendance, improve the quality of teaching and assessment, and strengthen its strategic leadership.

The setting, which caters for almost 1,000 students, including sixth form pupils, was deemed to be "in need of significant improvement", but after a monitoring visit by Estyn in January, has made the necessary improvements.

A summary of the monitoring report said: "Since the core inspection, the school has taken firm steps to strengthen provision for pupils with additional learning needs (ALN) and vulnerable pupils, along with improving the strategic overview of this area. A clear leadership structure has been established and leaders work together closely to meet the needs of these pupils.

"Leaders have strengthened the way in which they prioritise and promote attendance significantly. As a result, arrangements for monitoring, analysing and responding to attendance patterns have improved.

"Leaders have introduced a range of appropriate methods to improve the effect of teaching on pupils’ progress. There is a specific focus on improving planning to ensure that all pupils have access to the curriculum.

"As a result of this focus on improving planning, staff have a shared understanding of expectations, which helps them to improve the quality of teaching.

"Across the school, leaders’ ability to self-evaluate and plan for improvement is stronger than at the time of the core inspection.

"The effect of this can be seen in the initial improvements identified in the areas of ALN, teaching and attendance."

The report added: "Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen is judged to have made sufficient progress in relation to the recommendations following the most recent core inspection.

"As a result, His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education and Training in Wales is removing the school from the list of schools requiring significant improvement."
