Wycombe Wanderers are one of several teams across the English football pyramid to sign an open letter following the soon-to-be changes for next year’s FA Cup.

It was announced in April that the world’s oldest football competition would undergo a revamp, in which replays from the first round will be scrapped.

In addition to this, fixtures in the cup will only take place on weekends, which includes the fifth round.

The latter has been played on a weekday for the past five campaigns.

However, the alterations were met with universal criticism across many teams from the Football League, as the move was only discussed with the 20 Premier League sides at the Football Association.

Following the news, many teams, which included Wanderers, have signed a letter to the Culture Secretary, Lucy Frazer, about how the Premier League ‘influenced’ this decision.

Sides in the top-flight don’t partake in the competition until the third round.

An extract of the letter reads: “We want to save the FA Cup.

“The Premier League’s influence in this decision is yet another example of football’s growing divide that has seen the gaps between and within divisions grow at all levels.

“This decision needs to be overturned.”

So far, 27 clubs have signed the letter.
