A WALKER had to be rescued after becoming disoriented during a hike.

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation were called out at 4am on Wednesday (March 13). The walker, who was on their own, departed Bangor at about 2pm; they intended to follow an AllTrails route around the Carneddau via Gyrn and Moel Wnion

As light fell, she became disoriented and ended up in the area of Bera Bach, in the Carneddau mountains, towards Aber Falls.

A spokesperson for the rescue team said: "They attempted to sit out the night and wait for first light to continue, but without overnight equipment became very cold so called for assistance.

"A small hill party was deployed and were able to drive within a short distance of the walker, who they assisted back to the vehicle and then drove them back to Bangor.

"Not everyone is familiar with Ordnance Survey mapping, even the digital versions. Many people use digital mapping to get out and about these days, walking and fitness apps are great for finding routes for all sorts of activities. Unfortunately, many show trails or 'Heatmaps' from other walkers which include any off-route errors they may make.

"Some lack detail, or allow a 'Wikipedia' style of updating trails on the app which may not be great for others to follow.

"Whatever you use, it's better to be familiar with it before you are on the hill trying to get your head round it.

"Fair play to our casualty for trying to sit it out and resolve it on her own.

"Pack some additional warm clothing, food and drink, and a charged headtorch, just in case things don't go to plan."
