FOUR businesses have been chosen as tenants for new beach retail kiosks, which are being redeveloped thanks to the Levelling Up Fund.

In January 2023, Anglesey Council’s Economic Development officers successfully bid for £17m from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, as well as £5.5m of match funding to provide £22.5m investment for Holyhead Town Centre.

With support from local delivery partners, the funding will transform key community culture and heritage assets and bring vacant properties in the town centre back into use.

One of projects will see Holyhead Town Council refurbish and redevelop the current beach shelters on Newry Beach. They will be transformed into retail kiosks to help small businesses grow.

Island Bakes, Môn Ice, Cuffed-in Coffee (all Holyhead based businesses) and Anglesey Hamper Company (currently based in Bryngwran) have been successful in securing the new retail kiosks following an expression of interest process.

Councillor Llinos Medi, Anglesey Council Leader and Economic portfolio holder, said: "The LUF support will help us to transform these existing beach shelters into retail kiosks which will benefit Anglesey companies and help them grow.

“These facilities will go on to play an important part in Anglesey's visitor experience - given the significant number of cruise passengers visiting the town each year - and serve those who live locally and visit.

"I’d like to thank Holyhead Town Council for leading on this important project and, of course, congratulate the four successful businesses. I wish them well on their new venture at Holyhead’s Newry Beach.”

It’s hoped that the new retail kiosks will be completed and ready for occupation by Summer 2024.

The "Holyhead: A culture and heritage driven transformation" bid, which secured LUF support, includes an exciting package of projects to increase employment; improve the town centre offer and visitor experience; increase footfall and spending; provide modern floor space to meet business needs and increase access to the arts, culture and leisure.

Endorsed by Virginia Crosbie Ynys Mon MP, the Holyhead LUF bid was closely aligned with the objectives of the Levelling Up White Paper and deemed the only one with a real chance of support and success in the competitive bidding process.
