ASPIRING young scientists continue to be given the chance of a lifetime, thanks to the generosity of a Llangefni family.

The Tomos Wyn Morgan Scholarship was established in 2015 and allows the brightest sixth form science student from Anglesey to attend the coveted London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF).

A two-week residential event held at Imperial College London, the forum attracts more than 500 of the world's leading young scientists, aged 16-21 years old, from more than 70 participating countries.

Tomos died suddenly in 2014, aged 30. His family decided to honour his memory by giving other students the chance to enjoy the same experiences he’d had whilst a pupil at Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni.

In recent years, Anglesey's brightest young scientists have benefited greatly from the attending the Forum. This summer Mili-Anne Archer, from Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, was given the chance.

Mili-Anne said: “Attending the London International Youth Science Forum was an amazing experience. I was able to enjoy lectures and demonstrations from leading scientists and visit world class laboratories and universities. I was also a great chance to meet new people, interested in science, from all over the world.”

The Morgan family continue to sponsor the £2,000 scholarship annually. It is awarded on their behalf by the Isle of Anglesey County Council after pupil submissions are assessed by an independent expert.

Tomos’ parents said: "Tomos was a gifted young man and fortunate enough to be chosen to attend the London International Youth Science Forum when he was in school. It was a great inspiration to him and broadened his horizons. He was stimulated by the excellence of the lectures and met young people from other walks of life who remained friends until his death.

“Tomos’ intention was to come back to Wales to set up an enterprise that would benefit local people. He would be pleased to think that his legacy is giving more young people from Anglesey, like Mili-Anne, the same rewarding opportunity that he had whilst attending the Science Forum in London.”

Councillor Dafydd Roberts, Anglesey’s Education and Welsh Language portfolio holder, , said: “This scholarship continues to give Anglesey students an invaluable opportunity to participate with their global peers at a highly prestigious science forum.

“I would like to thank the Morgan family for their generosity. This scholarship is benefitting our county’s most gifted science students and serves as a fine tribute to their son Tomos.”
