Prosecuting, Paulinus Barnes told the court that Jones and Ruby Williams had been in a relationship for two years when, in March, he was served with a domestic violence protection order.

Jones had inflicted domestic abuse upon Ms Williams throughout their relationship, the court heard.

On March 9, the couple went to a friend’s flat when, at about 11pm, Jones and the friend began to argue.

He was locked out of the flat by his friend, so kicked the front door repeatedly until Ms Williams opened it.

Jones then grabbed her arms and threw her to the ground outside the flat.

They returned home, and police later attended, but had to use force to enter their property after they had locked themselves in.

But upon entering their home, Jones could not be found, so officers returned the following day and arrested him.

On March 11, Jones, then being held in a police cell was told he was being taken to court, but told officers he would not go unless he was allowed a shower and to make a phone call.

He threw food at the walls of his cell and spat in an officer’s face, being causing criminal damage at the custody desk area.

Jones was released on bail on April 6; that day, police saw him and Ms Williams together, but he escaped from their property through a window and ran down an alley.

Police arrested him, though, after he was seen re-entering the property.

He was again taken to custody, while making derogatory comments about officers’ families, and damaging the police vehicle was transported him there by kicking and punching it.

Jones resisted officers as they attempted to restrain him, before kicking one of them in his groin.

As he was restrained again, he made further threats to the families of the officers involved, and shouted at one of them: “Speak Welsh, you dirty English c***.”

In a statement, Ms Williams asked the court to impose a restraining order, saying: “I want to end the cycle of violence.”

She added that her quality of life had been “greatly affected” by Jones, and that she had “great difficulty” in ending their relationship.

The couple also have a seven-month-old child together, but Ms Williams said: “If we stay together, I will continue to be abused by him.”

Defending Jones, who had 13 previous convictions, John Wyn Williams said that his offending “may have a root in the trauma he suffered as a child”.

Jones was also said to struggle with poor mental health and an addiction to cocaine.

But the reports from his time remanded in custody had been “positive”, and he was described as a man “not shy of hard work”.

Sentencing, Judge Timothy Petts told Jones that his offence of spitting was “particularly disgusting”.

He also issued a 10-year restraining order, prohibiting him from contacting Ms Williams save for via a social worker or solicitor regarding child contact arrangements.

Judge Petts told Jones: “Let me warn you that you are not going to use any child contact arrangements as a way of continuing the abuse of Ruby Williams.”

Jones will also pay a statutory surcharge.
