AN ANGLESEY drinking establishment has been handed a new one-out-of-five food hygiene rating due to its “generally poor standards”.

Penrhos Arms Hotel, at Holyhead Road, Llanfairpwll was given the score after assessment on May 31, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

The report into the business rated its hygienic food handling ‘major improvement necessary’, the cleanliness and condition of its facilities and building ‘improvement necessary’, and its management of food safety ‘generally satisfactory’.

The pub said the low rating had been due to a “clerical error”, and that the issue had been corrected, adding they fulyl complied with health procedures.

A spokesperson for the Penrhos Arms Hotel told the Chronicle: “Due to a clerical error and the environmental health officer concerned being away on holiday the issue has been corrected but we’ve been unable to get the rating corrected until they return.

“The hotel operates fully compliant with environmental health and adheres to all procedures and we look forward to it being rectified when they return.”

However, the county council said the poor rating was a fair reflection of the pub’s state, and that a re-inspection had been booked.

An Isle of Anglesey County Council spokesperson said: “Staff from our Public Protection Department carried out a food hygiene inspection at the premises on 31 May.

“Standards were found to be generally poor and subsequently a Food Hygiene Rating of 1 was issued.”

“We can confirm that the business has submitted a request for a re-rating and this inspection will be undertaken in due course.”
