A CONVICTED sex offender from Anglesey was spared jail despite having breached the terms of his suspended sentence order.

Nanu Miah, 40, of Rhosneigr, was ordered to pay £225 at Caernarfon Crown Court today (July 27).

He had been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, at Isleworth Crown Court on October 21, 2022 for the following offences:

  • Possession of extreme pornographic images.
  • Taking, permitting to be taken or making, distributing, or publishing indecent photographs of children.

Miah was also handed 25 days’ rehabilitation activity requirements and 200 hours’ unpaid work.

But he admitted in court today that he breached the order by failing to attend a pre-arranged unpaid work appointment on June 21.

He was unrepresented in today’s hearing, having said he did not feel he needed representation.

Prosecuting, Laura Knightly told the court that, in February, Miah received a “final warning” following a missed unpaid work appointment.

In May, he was cautioned for two offences of failing to comply with his sex offenders register notification requirements.

After then failing to attend his unpaid work appointment on June 21, he was sent a breach warning letter two days later.

Miah, who told the court he works as a chef, was unable to provide evidence as to why he did not attend.

He then received a court summons on July 5, detailing his breach.

Ms Knightly said that, so far, Miah has completed eight days’ rehabilitation activity requirements and more than 74 hours’ unpaid work.

Presiding over the case, Recorder Greg Bull refrained from activating Miah’s suspended sentence, but ordered him to pay a £100 fine, and costs to the Crown Prosecution Service of £125.

Recorder Bull told Miah: “Every time that you are in breach (of his suspended sentence), you risk, in real terms, having to go to prison for up to 24 months.

“I want you to keep that very much at the front of your mind when you leave today.

“Your breach has put the probation service to great inconvenience. They have had to waste resources on you, which they can ill-afford to do.

“Please be careful, for your own sake. Otherwise, you’ll be cooking in one of His Majesty’s prisons, rather than a restaurant.”
