NEARLY 150 Y Fron residents have signed a petition objecting a planning application by a motoring club to establish five stopover locations in their rural village.

The petition has been presented to Hywel Williams, Arfon MP, and the leader of Plaid Cymru Gwynedd, Dyfrig Siencyn, who both fully supported the opposition to the plans.

Plaid Cymru councillor for the area, Arwyn Roberts, said there is a strong feeling of unfairness regarding The Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act, which allows motorhome clubs to avoid following the rules and regulation of the usual Planning Act procedures.

He said: “Following the research, we discovered that The Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act is over half a century old.

“It makes no sense that individuals can avoid going through the normal process and develop sites for motor homes here in rural Wales.

“It would change the look and feel of a village, the natural environment and the community foundations of the area.”

Gwynedd Council's planning department has objected to the application and Mr Williams intends to raise the concerns in the House of Commons.

He said: “The Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960 needs to be looked at again.

“The act has not been reviewed for over 60 years as far as I‘m aware, a strange situation to say the least.

“I will ask parliamentary questions to find out what is the attitude of Westminster Government.

“I will also investigate what the situation is regarding the devolution of powers to our Senedd, where I would hope to see some lively interest in a subject that is important in both community and economic terms.”
