ANGLESEY’S latest 21st-century primary school opened to pupils for the first time on Monday (April 17).

The new £10million Ysgol Corn Hir school, in Llangefni, was built with funding provided by Isle of Anglesey County Council and Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning programme.

Bodelwyddan-based Wynne Construction was appointed as design and build contractor, and the new school is sited opposite the Bryn Meurig housing estate on the B5109 road.

Anglesey’s school modernisation programme began in 2012.

Its aim is to create the best possible educational environment for head teachers, teachers and children to succeed and thereby promote high standards.

Anglesey's education and Welsh language portfolio holder, Cllr Ieuan Williams, said: "I am delighted to see another exciting new education project realised on Anglesey.

“We are using Welsh Government funding to invest in new school buildings which are fit for purpose, in the right place, meet pupils’ needs and become a resource which communities can fully utilise.

"The new Ysgol Corn Hir is another fine example of what can be achieved.

“Its development has also led to significant investment in Llangefni - not only in terms of new infrastructure, but more importantly as a means of ensuring the very best education for children attending the new school."

Ysgol Corn Hir headteacher, Rhys Roberts, added: “We are all - children, parents, governors and staff - delighted that the school now has a new building. It's an exciting time in the school's history.

“A new, modern and fit for purpose building will ensure the best facilities and environment for our children. We can now build further on our exciting plans for the new curriculum.

“We are extremely grateful that the county council, its officers, and elected members have worked hard to secure a school that will serve the area for many generations to come.”

A project to extend currently Ysgol y Graig, Llangefni, is also underway and will be completed by September 2024.

This will mean that more than 25 per cent of Anglesey primary school pupils are taught in new schools.

Graham Dickson, contracts manager at Wynne Construction, said: “It has been fantastic to work once again with Isle of Anglesey County Council to build the new Ysgol Corn Hir and deliver state-of-the-art facilities for the staff and pupils in Llangefni.

“The team is passionate about delivering high-quality builds which help transform educational outcomes for students and boost the wider community.

"Ysgol Corn Hir is a shining example of that, and we look forward to seeing the impact our work helps bring in the future."
