HOLYHEAD'S very own Father Christmas has been named a 'Hidden Hero' in recognition of his community and entertainment work.

Richard Burnell has been vice-chair of Holyhead Maritime Museum for many years but is best known for his annual turn as the island’s most celebrated Father Christmas bringing cheer to children.

Richard started off in the role when a Brownie group said they wanted a "real Santa with a real white beard".

Then the island's Round Table group asked for his services too and the rest is history.

Richard was named 'Hidden Hero' by Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie.

Richard, who is celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary this year, said: “I am honoured and humbled to receive this award from Virginia.

“I have always said it's not about the individual. I'm just the front man as Santa. There are a lot of people involved in the Santa festivities and I thank them for their support and for every opportunity I have to make local people smile.”

Ms Crosbie said: “Richard has been absolutely brilliant in his role as the island’s Santa. He always brings festive cheer and happiness wherever he goes.

“I got to know him well on the trip to Greystones, Ireland before Christmas and he was a brilliant ambassador for Holyhead.

“I know he will be a popular choice as my Hidden Hero this month, not just for his Santa work but also for his unstinting dedication to the Maritime Museum too."

Hidden Heroes is an initiative run by Ms Crosbie to highlight the good work people do on the island.
