A MAN from Gwynedd who was involved in a police chase after he stole a car has been spared jail.

Sion David Glyn Morgan, 22, of Ty’n Y Borth, Llangybi, was handed a suspended sentence at Caernarfon Crown Court today (February 16).

The court heard how, on December 15, 2020, Morgan stole a Vauxhall Corsa vehicle in Nefyn, before driving it in a dangerous fashion on the A489 and its associated side roads.

He was also disqualified from driving and uninsured at the time.

Other individuals were in the car with Morgan, who was said to have been driving at speeds of roughly 70mph in zones where the limit was 40mph.

A police pursuit ensued, which ultimately resulted in a crash, causing damage to the car.

Morgan, who has nine previous convictions for 26 offences, almost all of which are motoring-related matters, refuted these accusations when interviewed.

In mitigation, the court heard that Morgan has not re-offended since the incident, and was said to have taken “significant steps” to rehabilitate himself.

He has since found a new job, home and partner.

Judge Nicola Saffman sentenced Morgan to 22 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years.

He is to complete 200 hours’ unpaid work, adhere to supervision requirements, and serve a three-year driving ban, as well as pay a £156 statutory surcharge.

Judge Saffman told him: “The best decision you made was to get out of Wales, travel to Scotland, get a job and a home, and find what is clearly, for you, a sensible partner with whom you are in a relationship.

“You are, in effect, a changed man.

“In the time taken to get to this point, you have turned your life around. It would benefit the community at large far better if I were to allow this rehabilitation to continue.

“This is not an easy order for you, but the intention of this order is for you to carry on being a law-abiding citizen.

“You have not offended since, which for you, is a record amount of time, so clearly, things are moving in the right direction.”
