A MURAL tribute to Wales footballing legend Gary Speed has been unveiled in a north Wales town.

2023 marks 12 years since the former Premier League midfielder tragically took his own life.

The 42-year-old former Hawarden High School pupil and Aston Park Rangers player was Wales manager when he died on November 27, 2011.

In his heyday, Speed was a much-loved and hard-working midfielder for Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United.

Speed, born in Mancot, also earned 85 caps for Wales and is high up on the Premier League's all-time appearance-makers with 535 of those to his name.

A mural on the Empire Cinema building in Holyhead on Anglesey is the latest piece of artwork to pay tribute to Speed.

Created by graffiti artist Andy Birch, the piece features a picture of a jubilant Speed in his Wales kit.

It also includes the phrase 'Sons of Speed' - which was recently made famous during a passionate speech by Welsh actor Michael Sheen ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Andy, who is from Colwyn Bay, said: "Here's a tribute painting of Gary Speed over in Holyhead on the side of the Holyhead Empire Cinema.

"Huge thank you to all the staff at the empire, along with Robert Henderson (Holyhead Town Council) and Ash and Liam on the scissor lift."
