A GWYNEDD pub transformed by five friends has been named the best in Wales!

Tafran y Madryn in Chwilog was closed for several years until 2021 when five local friends bought it and transformed it into a community hub, hosting local events and providing fresh, local food at their café and restaurant.

The pub, which dates back to 1868, won 'Best Pub in Wales' at the Countryside Alliance Awards in Cardiff last week and will now represent Wales in the UK finals, with the results to be announced in May at the House of Lords in London.

Plaid Cymru Member of the Senedd for Dwyfor Meirionnydd, Mabon ap Gwynfor and Member of Parliament, Liz Saville Roberts congratulated Tafarn Y Madryn at an awards ceremony in the Senedd.

Mabon ap Gwynfor MS was on hand to congratulate the Madryn team at the Senedd and Liz Saville Roberts MP has tabled a Motion in Westminster congratulating the Madryn on their success.

Mabon ap Gwynfor MS and Liz Saville Roberts MP said: "We are immensely proud of the team at Y Madryn, Chwilog on their recent success. They should be immensely proud of what they have achieved – to be named best pub in Wales is a significant achievement.’

"Y Madryn is a wonderful rural pub with great character and fantastic food, which has recently undergone substantial refurbishment work - transforming this historic pub into a popular community hub.’
