FIREFIGHTERS attended two incidents in North Wales yesterday (January 9) which both had started as controlled burnings.

The first was a shed fire on Min-Y-Don, Abergele at roughly 3.15pm.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said that this was a “fire involving a shed and a fence,” and that the “fire spread from reignition of controlled burning”.

An hour later, the service received reports of a similar incident in Bontenwydd, Gwynedd.

The service spokesperson described this as a “fire in the open” after the “controlled burning of cardboard, wood and gorse (had) gone out of control”.

One fire crew from Caernarfon attended this incident.

The fire service has reminded residents to take extra care when undertaking a controlled burning and to ensure they notify them if they are burning on their land.

Burning is allowed only between October 1 and March 31 in upland areas, and between November 1 and March 15 elsewhere.

If you are planning a controlled burn, please follow the guidelines below:

• Call North Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s control room on 01931 522006 to notify them of the time and location of the burn.

• Ensure you have sufficient people and equipment to control the fire.

• Check wind direction and ensure there is no risk to property, roads and wildlife.

• If a fire gets out of control, contact the service immediately, giving details of location and access.

• Always ensure a fire is completely out before you leave it and check the next day to ensure it has not reignited.

• Remember - it is illegal to leave a fire unattended or to have too few people to control it.
