MAJOR repairs on a ‘green’ special school’s roof will soon be complete – but the cost of the project is “not yet known” the council says.

The school’s first floor temporarily closed in July, 2021, after it was discovered roof repairs were needed

Subsequent investigations found further maintenance was required.

The special educational centre which caters for pupils aged 3 – 19 hit the headlines for its ‘living roof’ and specialised eco-design.

The latest work started in April, at the £8.5m school which was built by Wynne Construction, and was opened in April 2014.

The Isle of Anglesey County Council say the repairs are set to be completed in September.

The school was previously lauded for its award-winning green features which included a roof planted with the succulent sedum.

Pupils had celebrated Anglesey’s first ‘Excellent’ rating for the building’s environmental performance back in 2016.

Then the school was awarded the highest category in the ‘BREEAM’ sustainable building rating system.

It measured features such as energy and water use, the health and well-being of users, pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.

The school design also included photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, a biomass heating system, solar-powered hot water and low water demand sanitary installations.

An Isle of Anglesey County Council spokesperson said: “Maintenance works to the existing roof at Canolfan Addysg y Bont commenced in April.

“They will be completed in September followed by the removal of the scaffolding.

“The work at Canolfan Addysg y Bont does not have any bearing on other ongoing projects between Wynne Construction and the Council.

“The Council’s main priority remains the safety, care and well-being of all pupils, families and staff at Canolfan Addysg y Bont.

“The final cost of the repair work is not yet known.”
