A VALE of Clwyd road is undergoing an innovative net carbon zero resurfacing scheme.

Parc Y Dre, in Ruthin, saw the work start on Monday, August 8, which is designed to reduce the amount of carbon used in the process.

Denbighshire County Council declared a Climate Change and Ecological Emergency in July 2019 and committed to seeking to become a Net Carbon Zero and Ecologically Positive Council by 2030.

The road will be the first in North Wales resurfaced using an innovative surfacing material, lowering the overall carbon of the process significantly from that of traditional treatments, and delivered and offset by the only accredited carbon neutral surfacing contractor in the UK, Miles Macadam.

Parc Y Dre has been chosen for this process, since the existing carriageway is constructed of concrete, which makes it a suitable site.

Milepave has been designed to ensure long term successful performance, whilst reducing Denbighshire County Council’s carbon footprint.

Cllr Barry Mellor, Denbighshire's lead member for environment and transport, said: “We all know that highways maintenance is one of the most carbon-heavy activities we undertake as a council.

"We chose Parc Y Dre in Ruthin as we feel it is suitable for this project which will be the first net carbon zero resurfacing project in North Wales.

“The council is pleased to be working with Miles Macadam who will help us maintain our goal to become a Net Carbon Zero and Ecologically Positive Council by 2030 through innovative projects such as this.

“Going forward as climate change becomes even more important, we will continue to work hard to ensure the council is maintaining the reduction of its carbon footprint.”

Business development manager for Miles Macadam, Toby Fitzsimmons, said: “Miles Macadam are delighted to partner Denbighshire County Council in their efforts to counter climate change within their highway maintenance programme.”

The work is expected to be completed by August 18.
