IPSWICH Town Football Club has led the tributes to a former footballer from North Wales who died last week.

Aled Owen, from Brynteg on Anglesey, died aged 88 on Friday, August 5 following a battle with Covid-19.

He had also lived for many years in the neighbouring village of Benllech with his late wife Doreen.

Father to Jane, Merfyn and Karen, he was a talented footballer who played in the 1950's and 60's.

Mr Owen began his football career at Bangor City.

The winger then went on to sign for English giants Tottenham Hotspur in September 1953, where he went on to make one senior appearance versus Preston North End at White Hart Lane.

In July of 1958, he transferred over to Ipswich Town where he became more of a regular and went on to feature in 30 matches, scoring three goals.

During the 1960/61 season in which Alf Ramsey’s side won the Second Division Owen made eight appearances and scored once.

In the following campaign he played just the one league match, the Boxing Day 1-0 home victory over Leicester City, as well as three in cup competitions, as the Blues won the First Division title.

The club has paid tribute to him following his death. A statement from them said: "The club was saddened to learn of the passing of Aled Owen yesterday. Aled played for Town from 1958-1963.

"A winger, Aled also represented Bangor City, Spurs and Wrexham during his career. May he rest in peace."

Mr Owen later returned home to North Wales and signed for Wrexham in July 1963.

He went on to make four appearances for the Racecourse outfit.

Away from football, Mr Owen was a member of the Chôr Meibion Goronwy Choir, based in Benllech.

A statement from the choir following Mr Owen's death read: "The choir was saddened to learn of the passing of one of our tenors Aled Owen yesterday.

"Not only a fantastic tenor who has sang with many choirs, Aled was also a Premiership footballer during his career.

"From all at Meibion Goronwy, we send our deepest condolances to Aled's family and friends. May he rest in peace."
