A CYCLIST died in hospital a week after his bike crashed at speed into a lamppost, the opening of an inquest heard on Friday (August 5).

Reece Thompson, 19, of Lon y Bryn, Bangor, died in hospital at Stoke-on-Trent on July 26 after the collision in Deiniol Road, Bangor.

Assistant coroner for North West Wales, Sarah Riley, at Caernarfon, said the provisional cause of death was traumatic brain injury.

The investigation into the tragedy continues and the inquest was adjourned.

Reece represented several football clubs, including Llandudno FC and Bethesda Athletic, and also playing rugby for North Wales Rugby.

Following his death, Llandudno FC wrote: "Today we heard the sad news of the passing of a former under-23s player, Reece Thompson.

"Everyone at Llandudno Football Club is devastated with the news and send our condolences to Reece’s family and friends."

Reece's former Caernarfon Town FC youth coach, Richard Cashman, added: "It was a pleasure getting to know you, and also having the opportunity to coach you from the age of 13-14 years old, and watch you grow into a young man and father."
